Driving Student Success Through Pay-for-Performance Models

At MGT, our commitment to transformational outcomes for students aligns seamlessly with the goals of our school, district, and state partners. As educational institutions face high accountability and limited resources, leaders have a unique opportunity to leverage pay-for-performance models. These models tie support fees directly to measurable student and school outcomes, ensuring that investments result in tangible gains for student learning. MGT and other dedicated partners have seen promising results through these models, highlighting the effectiveness of results-focused education solutions.

Key Benefits of Pay-for-Performance Models

MGT builds our Pay-for-performance models on accountability, transparency, and an unrelenting focus on educational outcomes. Here’s how they bring value to schools:

  • Boosts Accountability & Transparency: Pay-for-performance models enable schools to track clear, measurable impacts on student success by holding vendors accountable. MGT’s projects align efforts with student-centered goals, such as improving test scores and engagement.
  • Promotes Cost-Effective Resource Use: Schools only pay for proven results, helping them make the most of limited budgets by funding programs that demonstrably deliver value.
  • Builds Stakeholder Confidence: The transparent, results-oriented approach strengthens trust among parents, teachers, and policymakers by demonstrating accountability.
  • Supports Flexibility & Improvement: Pay-for-performance models encourage vendors to adapt based on feedback, fostering a collaborative relationship focused on outcomes.
  • Aligns to Data-Driven Decision Making: Comprehensive data collection enables schools to make informed choices about programs and services, reinforcing what truly benefits students.

By embracing these principles, forward-thinking leaders see substantial gains in student learning and operational efficiency. MGT has contributed to the success of pay-for-performance models nationally, helping to guide states and districts in designing tailored frameworks that meet their unique needs.

Pay for Performance In Action

In partnership with 15 schools as part of Utah’s School Turnaround and Leadership Development Act, MGT focused on professional learning and targeted coaching.

From the beginning, we began our collaborative work, building the capacity of individual leaders and teachers, including touch points with every teacher in every classroom every week. Our theory of action throughout this work was: if schools select a narrow set of evidence‐based practices that address the root cause issues they face, and implement those practices with depth and fidelity, then those schools will help students maximize their achievement.

Throughout this 3‐year project, the cohort of 15 turnaround schools supported by MGT —8 of which were in Granite School District —increased raw proficiency from 18 to 26 in ELA and 17 to 22 in math. These improvements constitute an average of a 34% percent increase in proficiency in math and a 42% percent increase in proficiency in ELA over the three‐year period. These improvements also represent 35.8% greater growth in proficiency than the statewide average (1.7% statewide growth).

The Future of Pay-for-Performance in Education

As more educational institutions and legislators embrace pay-for-performance models, MGT remains committed to advancing this impactful approach. By tying fees to results, schools and districts can focus on what truly matters: improving student outcomes and optimizing resource allocation. Through collaborative partnerships, transparent practices, and a dedication to continuous improvement, MGT is helping shape a future where every dollar invested in education is tied to positive, lasting change for students.
