Driving Economic Impact That Builds Stronger Communities

“By focusing more on creating socioeconomic opportunities for families and communities, we can educate and empower more people to achieve greater prosperity. Through education and state and local government services, we can facilitate economic empowerment by holding ourselves and each other accountable for the change we want to see in the world.”  – Fred Seamon, PhD

Disparity studies are instruments of economic empowerment. These studies illuminate the gaps in opportunities and resources, paving the way for systemic change that benefits communities of color. At their core, disparity studies hold the power to ignite a ripple effect: creating jobs, fostering business growth, increasing family income, and driving tax revenue—all essential for building thriving communities.

For over four decades, MGT has been at the forefront of this transformative work. Long before the term “disparity studies” entered mainstream vocabulary, MGT was conducting disparity research and equal opportunity studies that laid the groundwork for this kind of work.

In 1987, MGT partnered with the Florida Board of Regents to address disparities in minority student enrollment across the state university system, leading to more inclusive educational policies. Similarly, MGT worked in Palm Beach County to analyze the disproportionate suspension of Black students in local schools, sparking critical conversations about fairness in education.

These early projects reflect MGT’s longstanding commitment to doing good work that improves lives. Today, this mission continues to drive every effort—helping public organizations achieve results that positively impact communities.

Pathways to a Better Future

Creating economic empowerment requires collective action:

  • Education and Opportunity: Education is the most powerful tool for socioeconomic progress. Expanding opportunities through public services can empower individuals and create thriving communities.
  • Policy Transformation: Outdated regulations and systems need to be modernized to eliminate barriers and increase opportunity. Achieving this requires leadership and courage.
  • Community Action: Constructive advocacy and engagement are key to fostering change and redirecting society toward fairness and opportunity.

Making a Measurable Difference

MGT has a long history of delivering transformative results for public organizations across education, state, and local government. Our work is rooted in helping communities achieve their full potential by addressing disparities and creating solutions that drive lasting improvements.

One example of a standout is our collaboration with the Ford Foundation to establish the Black Belt Community Foundation. Through a strategic planning process, MGT helped develop programs and governance structures that continue to transform 13 counties in Alabama. This initiative has significantly improved the quality of life in the region and serves as a model for driving sustainable progress.

Similarly, MGT participated in the Rural Development Initiative Endowment Program, helping community foundations secure critical funding to support economic growth and development across multiple states.

Disparity Studies as a Catalyst for Change

Disparity studies are essential tools for identifying challenges, uncovering opportunities, and driving meaningful change. They enable public organizations to better serve their communities by creating actionable solutions that lead to economic empowerment and community growth.

At MGT, our focus is on delivering results that make a tangible difference. Together, we can unlock potential, transform communities, and build a brighter future.
